That said, if it was disc-based it'd probably cost $100, which is three new premium civilisations right there. There's a lot to like about AOE Online even though it doesn't have the same head-scratching strategy as needed in the original AOE games but if there's anything that could hamper the game's uptake it's the pricing structure: Premium civilisations cost $29.95, booster packs (which offer new game modes) cost $14.95 and new items for your capital city cost $9.95. While quests can be played by one person, many offer the option of playing with another person co-operatively, but so far I've had no luck finding anyone to co-op with вЂ“ and some of the missions are much easier to complete with another player than on your own. To construct buildings, you click on a villager, select the building you want to build (a barracks, for example) and then click where you want it to go: a villager will head to the spot and the structure emerges from the ground. As your civilisation grows, so too do the units available. Your capital city acts as the game's central hub, the place where you start new quests and generally hang out. As with the AOE games of old, you gather resources (wood, gold, meat) to build up your forces and create more powerful units. You start the game by choosing to be either the Greek or Egyptian civilisation and the early quests are simple.

You can spend experience points (earned by completing quests) to upgrade your civilisation's technology, as well as fortifying defences, utilities and the economy. Structures, even wooden fences, start smoking when attacked, followed by licks of flame, then finally become engulfed in an inferno, collapsing to the ground in a pile of rubble and smoke. But it also pays great attention to the little details: when a villager kills a wild animal, he carves off huge chunks of meat then carries them back to the town centre small pieces of rock fall from stone mines insects buzz around vegetable patches pelicans perch on docks, waiting for fishing boats to unload their catch. Most of my review is based on my time with a preview build of AOE Online, and the first thing that struck me was the Disney cartoon-look of units and the game world.

Since it closed Ensemble Studios a while back, Microsoft has not really had much to do with the real-time strategy genre.
